Green Heron: "Two Greens and a Blue"
Were the herons truly hidden if my heart and mind were one?
(Green Heron - photo by Neil Barker - September 8, 2024)
Beyond the sunflowers, hidden in greenery, herons wait.
Movement and colours reveal themselves for those with eyes to see.
Were the herons truly hidden if my heart and mind were one?
I took these photos September 8, 2024. I was checking a side trail where I had seen sunflowers last week. This trail ends at a pond that empties into the Ottawa River.
I was happy to see 3 herons at the pond: 2 Green Herons and a lone Great Blue Heron. I moved slowly towards the Green Heron perched in a nearby tree.
I alternated between watching the Green Heron in the tree and the Great Blue Heron standing at the shore of the pond.
After watching the two nearest herons, I focused on the Green Heron on the opposite shore of the pond.
I nearly got the heron trifecta. I was missing the Black-crowned Night Heron. I have not seen a Black-crowned Night Heron in a few weeks. I will have more opportunities in the coming weeks as all three types of herons will be migrating through the area.
English - Korean:
Heron = 왜가리 / Waegari
Green = 녹색 / Noksaek
Green Heron = 녹색왜가리 / Noksaek-waegari
Thank you Neil. Now I see why Heidi loves your work so much. You’re quite the 🦉 field guide!
This is a wonderful and immersive article, Neil. The poetry, video, photos and writing, including the vocabulary in Korean, all support our experience of going on this nature walk with you, from the sunflowers to the discovery and observations of the herons. It is a kind of translation. I hope you’ll see a Black-crowned night heron soon and be able to share that with us as well.
