(Bald Eagle - photo by Neil Barker)
Cold, hungry, and lost and cannot do more than soar in circles.
Remember: focus and use what you have to survive and thrive.
Keep flying, soaring above it all seeing everything.
I saw this Bald Eagle flying over the Ottawa River in January 2023. I remember wondering if the eagle was hunting or a very late migrant moving southwards towards more open waters. There was a slight snowfall that you can see contrasted with the eagle’s dark feathers.
Sijo Notes: In this sijo, I tried to use the first line to create an image from the outside look in: you seeing the eagle. The second line I tried to create a feeling of being the eagle and thinking about what to do in the situation. The third line is to resolve the issue of being cold, hungry, and lost but remembering to use what you have to do move beyond.
Bird Notes:
Immature Bald Eagles spend the first four years of their lives in nomadic exploration of vast territories and can fly hundreds of miles per day. Some young birds from Florida have wandered north as far as Michigan, and birds from California have reached Alaska.
