Eastern Screech-Owl: "Slumber Tree"
What thoughts arise in the unknown world between sleep and awake?
A weathered old corpse of wood remains standing lifeless and still.
Yet life is slumbering within and peering out sleepily.
What thoughts arise in the unknown world between sleep and awake?
I took these photos on my morning hike on October 19, 2024. I regularly pass by this old tree in the woods. This old tree has been an occasional home and shelter for Eastern Screech-Owls.
I walked quietly closer and saw this owl looking out from a hole in the trunk. It has been a long time since I have seen an owl in this tree.
I took a few images and quietly left. I wished them a peaceful and quiet afternoon. Welcome back to the area little owl friend.

How beautiful! These photos remind me of the winter when a tawny owl was always roosting in a hole like this in a tree alongside Edinburgh's Water of Leith
Beautiful images Neil! I love the colors and the way the bird is tucked away. I’ve never photographed a screech owl, just hear their unique and beautiful sounds very often.
One night I was done fishing and one was right in my head lamp’s light as I walked through the woods and back to my truck. It looked so unbothered. Thank you for sharing.
