Pileated Woodpecker: "Knock-Knock"
What will be revealed but the spirit of the one searching?
The knocking of wood echoing throughout the Winter forest.
Searching for treasures hidden among the morning shadows.
What will be revealed but the spirit of the one searching?
I took these photos on Sunday January 26, 2025. I was hiking off trail searching for an Eastern Screech-Owl when I heard knocking: woodpecker?
I stopped and listened. I saw a Pileated Woodpecker at the base of an old tree.
Zooming in for a closer look I noticed the red moustache: male Pileated Woodpecker.
I watched for a few minutes and then continued on my hike. I never did see the local Eastern Screech-Owl, but seeing this Pileated Woodpecker was a nice coincidence.
English - Korean:
Woodpecker = 딱따구리 / dakdakuri
Pileated Woodpecker = 도가머리딱따구리 / doga-meori dakdakuri (roughly translates as Long-haired Woodpecker)
Wonderful post, Neil. The sijo is outstanding and really sets the stage for this incredible Pileated Woodpecker series.
Stunning photos Neil. The red pops incredibly so. I love, as usual, your final line of the sijo. That what is revealed is the spirit itself. Lovely.
