(White-tailed Deer - photo by Neil Barker)
A small stand of trees conceals much, but dry leaves reveal footfalls.
All of your senses alert and curiosity growing.
Unsure yet unafraid, you simply wait and watch the unknown.
I took these photos in early October 2023. White-tailed Deer occasionally stay in the local conservation area, but usually not too long. These two likely stayed for a few weeks. I did see them one other time far off and also some tracks in mud. I think the doe on the left is the mother to the doe on the right judging by their size
I was actually looking for that owls in this part of the conservation area. I’ve seen a Great Horned Owl and a Barred Owl in this small woods. While looking up for owls I heard leaves crunching nearby. I froze and slowly looked around seeing these two looking back at me. This was one of my favourite encounters of 2023.
How lovely! The other night, we were walking through the woods near our house around dusk when my husband pointed out a doe bedded down just watching us pass. Made me really think about how often I’ve possibly been that close without ever knowing!
