Wonderful! It appears you stumbled upon a roosting area. Herons roost at night in bare trees. If you noticed any large nests in the higher branches of the trees, it is their rookery.
Neil, my bet is they already nest in the area. Rookeries tend to be in remote areas that get little traffic. There are 2 in my area that are extremely difficult to get to.
Good to know. That area in the back of the photo and to the right is a marsh/swamp with plenty of dead-standing trees. I'm hoping to get back there with some snowshoes this Winter once the water has frozen over. I'll check out some past nesting sites! :)
Feels infrequent I see a picture of these birds in a tree!
