Searching beneath the surface for that which sustains tomorrow.
All the while remaining aware of the bright world of today.
Where has yesterday gone and the memories of a life lived?
I took these photos April 20, 2025. I returned to my local conservation area for a short late afternoon hike. I spotted this Northern Flicker searching for dinner in the ground.
I do not often get to see Northern Flickers on the ground. Most times, I see them in trees and hear them calling out. This was a nice surprise seeing this Northern Flicker spend time hunting on the ground.
English - Korean:
Northern Flicker = 쇠부리딱다구리 / swaeburi-dakdaguri
Iron = 쇠 / swae
Beak = 부리 / buri
Woodpecker = 딱다구리 / dakdaguri
(*Northern Flicker in Korean is 쇠부리딱다구리 / swaeburi-dakdaguri and roughly translates as Iron-beak Woodpecker.)
Feathered forager,
Northern Flicker, “Iron Beak.”
Tasteful pattern mix.
I had a dream about a Northern Flicker last night. How amazing to wake up and see this first thing on my phone. I just love them. They're one of the most bizarre looking woodpeckers, but all the contrasting things going on in their plumage somehow works! Such a spectacular bird, and wonderful shots, Neil!
