Lovely photos of a very handsome bird. I love the Korean word 'dakdaguri'!

Thanks, Juliet! Northern Flickers are quite the unique-looking woodpecker. That word 딱다구리 / dakdaguri for woodpecker refers to the noise 딱딱 / dakdak and the sound of knocking. :)

Agreed, James. Sometimes I forget they're woodpeckers like their Pileated and Downy and Hairy cousins.

You got some really nice pictures! I’ve never seen one that close, although I happen to know what their feathers look like now—found a wing on the beach from one that was probably prey to some larger bird. Buried it. Their feathers have yellow shafts, unlike a lot of birds. Not your average woodpecker, that’s for sure!

Thanks, Carole and much appreciated! I so rarely seen them this close either - luck and timing that day. :)

The Korean translation, iron beak woodpecker, is so interesting! I've always loved the spots on a flicker and you captured them well. And ... oh ... that poem arouses some melancholy. A beautiful melancholy. Thank you, Neil!

Thanks, Jeanne and much appreciated! Their spots are seriously great camouflage - I almost didn't see this flicker until they bounced and hopped across the grass. :)

This is a great observation of the Northern Flicker feeding on the ground. Great work, Neil. I really like the sijo and the photos highlight the markings so well.

I cannot imagine that being a good camouflage anywhere in the UK! But I can see how it would work where you are :-)

They are beauties, Neil, and their coloring and behaviors remind me of Woodpeckers. While visiting Oklahoma in April, I photographed a Northern Flicker dining on the ground and will eventually include them in an essay. There are so many great beings to share in our work- thank you for doing a great job for nature and her beings!

I had a dream about a Northern Flicker last night. How amazing to wake up and see this first thing on my phone. I just love them. They're one of the most bizarre looking woodpeckers, but all the contrasting things going on in their plumage somehow works! Such a spectacular bird, and wonderful shots, Neil!

That's an awesome coincidence and synchronicity, Nathaniel! I sometimes forget they're woodpeckers, such a unique look and colouring.
