I love these beautiful beings and recently learned that for millennia the Ojibwe people call them asiginaak. I love the poetry that word fills my mind with.

Redwing blackbirds are west of me in Yamhill County. There's a grove of trees they come to every year.

That's great Michael. I look forward to them in the Spring and they're nice to help ring in the new season.

I've seen a few red winged blackbirds in northern Virginia this month, but I did not know what the females looked like until this post! Thanks Neil!

That's great to hear Wei Tam about the return of the Red-winged Blackbirds. The female Red-winged Blackbirds are certainly striking and unique in their markings as well!

Thanks James and I agree. I remember years ago, the first time seeing a female Red-winged Blackbird and not knowing what I was looking at. Haha.

Thanks for posting the info for Birdcast. I am in Toronto. It does not seem all the Canada Geese are back yet. I have not seen any red-winged blackbirds yet. But I am sure I will soon.

Thanks Perry and happy to share. Hopefully the coming weeks more of the Red-winged Blackbirds will be arriving in the Toronto area. Similar as you, we still have Canada Geese arriving daily in flocks of 15 or more.
