So exciting! I remember we exchanged comments a while back about how much you wanted to see a Great Grey Owl. I’m so glad you did. And such great documentation to remember the encounter by! And again your zoomed out photos provide context of what it’s like to actually bird. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks James and it was nice to see this owl. I do owe full credit to the crows for this sighting and would not have seen this owl without their help. Nice to be able to see a great grey and compare their size to a Barred Owl which I have seen many times over the years. Quite the difference.
That's a great find, Neil, I'm sure you were excited to see it! I like how you described finding it by attending to the crows' behavior. Beautiful work with your words and images, as always.
Thanks for sharing! I've only seen owls a few times while walking. Once, a pair flew just a few feet above me. I was so stunned I could only stand there, listening to their wings. Another time, I couldn't see them, but a group was calling back and forth in a stand of trees.
A gracious thanks to you and your crow buddies, without whom we would not have been able to share the pleasure of seeing this beautiful, serene owl. I had the joy of finding an owl in a tall pine tree on an afternoon walk this week. Alerted by its call, I searched the branches until I found them sitting at the base of a high limb next to the trunk. Unfortunately, I couldn't see them well enough to identify the breed. An unexpected delightful encounter!
This is fantastic, Neil! I really like how much the owl blends in with the branches and gray skies. It's a remarkable sighting. Giving thanks to the alerts from the Crows. Beautiful sijo to set the stage.
Thank you, Heidi and very much appreciated. Their camouflage is quite amazing. My crow buddies are great for pointing me in the right direction of where I should be looking.
Neil, seeing these photos and reading your experience finding and watching this Great Grey Owl just made my night. I will have wonderful wise owl dreams tonight. Thank you for sharing this magical experience.
The owl is just sitting quietly meditating, not bothered by the sounds of the crows. I find this interesting.
That's a great point, Perry. The crows were keeping their distance with this owl. The owl seemed to just doze off and ignore the crows.
Beautiful! I'm going birding with a local group this morning. I hope we see an owl... I've only seen a Screech Owl at the wildlife rescue.
Thanks Thomas and all credit to the crows. Hopefully you have the opportunity to see an owl as well.

Thanks Brenda and that sounds like an awesome experience having them call back and forth to one another. That is something I hope to hear one day.
